Manolo Campion

Movement, environment and culture have always been inspiring to Manolo Campion. The Chicago-born photographer grew up surrounded by creativity and adventure, spending time in both the US and Latin America. “Traveling to new places allows me to see things with that ‘beginner’s mind,” he says. “The high points always happen when I travel to a new place and am forced to deal with a new environment – first it was London, then New York, and now Sydney.”

After graduating from The Pasadena Art Centre College of Design, he moved to London establishing himself in editorial and advertising. Now a revered and in-demand talent, Manolo splits his time between New York and Sydney. “Collaborating with other people is always my favourite part of being a photographer… when our different points of view combine to reveal something unexpected, it makes all the work worth it!”

My favourite kind of brief is a completely open brief can be the most daunting but also the most exciting, it means the client loves my work and trusts me to guide the ship.

My signature aesthetic is… an emphasis on form and structure.

My work has appeared in… Vogue Taiwan, Vogue Ukraine, Interview Mag, V Mag, Russh, Coach, Michael Kors, L’Oréal.

My favourite location to shoot is… I love stepping into a space that someone has put a lot of thought into (house, building etc), I love seeing their point of view, distilling the space down to what I see as its essentials, and then creating something with it.

My muse is… I don’t have a muse, but I would LOVE to find one. I love the idea of aligning with someone over a period of time – so that each new shoot builds on the foundation of the last.

My perfect image has… dynamic new compositions, whether it be with a body, structure, or other elements in the frame. I love how different framings affect how the eye moves around the finished image.
